I'm at 50% or better success with this now.which is in my favor IMO. Shoot a few shots to get their attention, then start firing in earnest once they start lining up on you. Once you get reasonably good you can intentionally bait planes into diving on you, then shoot them in the face. Harder to do with 37/40mm cannons but brutal with faster-firing 20mm and MGs. A technique I often use is to apply more lead than necessary and then let the target fly through the tracer stream that is aligned with his flight path and repeat. This was a huge epiphany for me when I watched the video. I can't emphasize enough the concept of getting your tracer stream aligned with the target's path, then adjusting lead based on whether they are passing ahead of or behind it. Fire at enemies in 'third person' and observe the tracers. With cannons, use HE shells when available since they seem to do the most damage.
Sometimes you may see a target that you can't engage right now, but who is attacking someone near you and may pass briefly over your ying to 'track' a fast target with your turret as he passes at close range is usually impossible, so point your gun ahead of where you think he might pop out over the tree line or a building, and put a string of fire in his path as soon as you see him again. Once they fly through that zone, then are directly above/beside you and flying away, you are better off scanning the sky and preparing for the next attack than shooting wildly with little chance of a hit at a fleeting target. Lead more than you think you need to because even if you miss, tracers in front of the target may spoil his attack on your teammate. Hold your fire until they are in effective range and really pour it on during the period that the rate of angular change is the least.
You have the greatest chance of success against targets flying toward you or someone near you.
Here are my tips (nothing that hasn't already been said):ĭon't waste a ton of ammo and announce your position by firing wildly at distant contacts, unless you are trying to 'bait' them (see below). Something I used to dread before is now a welcome source of entertainment/spawn points/RP/SL. I actually enjoy playing SPAA and shoot down planes all the time now.even in the 'bad' SPAAs like the M19.
